What Does it Feel Like to be High on Heroin?

by | Mar 24, 2017 | Drug Addiction Treatment Center

Heroin is a very strong opiate drug which cause a euphoric feeling or a
high. That feeling can be so good, that people will take the Heroin again
and again, in order to obtain the euphoric feeling. After a while, the
person doesn’t get high as much each time on the same dose. Then one has to
increase the dose, risking an overdose, while trying to “chase” after the
high they first had when they initially used the Heroin.

Why is Using Heroin a Bad Thing

Using Heroin means taking a drug which has not been tested for potency. One
has no real way of knowing what they’ll get. A person may easily take too
much at once, resulting in an overdose. Overdosing on Heroin or other
opiate drugs causes one to stop breathing, thus causing death within about
five minutes. In 2014, over 34,000 Americans died from unintentional opiate
overdoses. Using Heroin IV, or “shooting up” can create additional problems
when needles are shared, making it possible to spread infectious diseases
such as HIV or Hepatitis B or C, as well as others.

What Happens to the Body With Heroin

Using Heroin stimulates opiate receptors in the brain. When that happens,
the body’s own opiate system, called Endorphines shuts down. This can lead
to depression and a lack of energy. While that is occurring, opiate
receptors in the brain, which are not used to being so stimulated, become
less and less sensitive. When that happens, one’s brain is already
beginning to become damaged. Sometimes a person will say, they will not
feel happiness if they don’t take Heroin. Usually a rapid, downhill spiral
will eventually lead to the person reaching rock bottom; either in jail, in
a hospital or in a cemetery.

Are Opiates Ever Needed

Yes, opiates are pain killers and are used when someone has to have surgery
or they have been in an accident. The drug Heroin is illegal in the United
States and is not prescribed for any condition. That is because of it’s
potency and abuse potential. Technically speaking, Heroin in classified by
the Food and Drug Administration as a Schedule One Drug, meaning it is not
believed to be safe and/or effective for any condition.
