Electric water heaters are used for heating water above its initial temperature. Once the water is heated, it can then be used to heat the home and hot water throughout the home. Because hot water heaters are quite costly, it is important that they are maintained properly. Follow these two Electric Hot Water Heater in Sparks maintenance tips to ensure the hot water heater runs effectively and safely for many years.

Flush The Tank

Sediment buildup in the tank of a water heater can end up causing clogs in water lines. The buildup can also end up reducing the efficiency of the heater. In order to flush the tank of an Electric Hot Water Heater in Sparks area, simply turn off the power to the heater unit. From there, shut off the cold water inlet and connect a long garden hose to the drain valve of the tank. Place the opposite end of the garden hose out through a window, preferably in an area that will not be affected by hot water. Open the pressure and drain valve on the tank and the unit will automatically begin to drain out through the hose. Allow for a complete draining. This will ensure all the sediment is removed. Once the draining process is complete, close the drain valve, re-open all hot water spigots throughout the house, and power the tank back on. Complete a full flush at least once annually.

Check Pressure Valve

To keep an electric water heater in great condition, the pressure valves must be checked periodically. To do this, turn off the electricity to the water heater. From there, shut off the cold water inlet to the water heater and place a bucket right under the pressure relief valve. This will catch any water that drips while the pressure is being checked. Lastly, pull the trip lever on the pressure valve. If the valve is in good working condition, you will hear a sound that resembles a rush of air. There also will be noticeable vapor and water streaming through the valve. If these signs are not noticeable, the valve will need to be replaced.
