There is a new trend in the world of engagement rings. It is the men’s engagement ring or the man-engagement ring. While mens diamond rings are not unusual, wearing them as part of the engagement or pre-wedding tradition is unique in this century. However, it has not been without precedent.
A Brief History of the Man-engagement Ring
In some countries, it is not unusual for males to wear some form of engagement or commitment ring. In fact, men have been wearing some form of engagement ring for centuries. These include those who live in Brazil and Sweden. However, for many North American and European men, even wearing wedding ban was not the norm.
The first attempt to change this for American males occurred during the 1920s. In 1926, jewelry producers and jewelers try to persuade men of the advantage of wearing an engagement ring. The marketing campaign boasted the man-engagement ring was “modern expression of an ancient custom.” Radio and print ads tried to stir up interest in this new “custom.” Window displays in various appropriate shops across the country revealed an excellent line of engagement rings for the male sex. They bore names that were definitively masculine in nature such as the Master and the Stag.
The campaign failed. The then traditional values held. Engagement rings of any type were given by men to women. The same held true with a half-hearted push in the 1950s. It was not until more recently that the suggestion has become a matter seriously considered by many men. For those moderns, mens diamond rings can be given by a woman to a man to symbolize the seriousness of the event.
Why Mens-engagement Rings?
Today’s changing world of engagement and weddings is affected by two major factors:
1. A more egalitarian role – more women are proposing to men than ever before
2. Same-sex marriages
For both these groups, engagement rings symbolize the commitment of both parties. They denote the beginning of a partnership. Engagement rings, even highly expensive diamond-loaded ones, are more than an accessory. Sure, they are something to show off to friends, family, co-workers and complete strangers. They are something to be proud of and speak about. However, in the end, they symbolize what is to come – a marriage in which both individuals declare they will be together forever. This is the perfect reason why men, whether gay or not, should consider wearing a man-engagement ring.
Mens Diamond Rings
Whether you plan a big or small wedding, wedding rings are almost a given. Why not incorporate this concept into your engagement as well. Mens diamond rings are perfect in this capacity for indicating what is promised today and to be kept forever.
