To get a Dialysis Technician Certification you will need schooling. Generally, it can be obtained within a year at a community school, technical school or even a hospital. It will only take two semesters to complete.
Once a student has graduated, they will need a BONENT certification, this is also knows as Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology. This confirms the graduate has completed the necessary course work and that they can apply the learned concepts to real world situations. There is a $210 fee prior to taking the BONENT, if you prefer an electronic version the cost is $240. The test will have 150 questions. Each year a $55 fee must be paid to keep your Dialysis Technician Certification.
As of 2008, a new law was passed that requires each worker in the field either be state certified or nationally certified. The NNCO or National Nephrology Certification Organization certification fulfills both requirements. This exam costs $245 and has 200 multiple choice questions.
Once you have obtained your Dialysis Technician Certification you will have many different rolls, including maintaining and oerating the dialysis treatment equipment. Other things you may do include dialyzer reprocessing, direct patient care, equipment maintenance, water treatment monitoring etc. You will also assist patients with mental or physical concerns they may have prior to, during and even after the procedure.
Other job duties include:
* Take blood pressure
* Check weight of patient
* Update patient records
* Blood flow adjustments and rate measurements
* Update doctor or nurse with any changes in patient
* Perform CPR and other emergency procedures should it be necessary
* Patient Blood Sterilization
An experienced technician can earn up to $40,000 a year. When you first obtain your Dialysis Technician Certification you will not have experience yet, so you can expect a salary of between $25,000 and $30,000 a year.
