During this exciting time in your life, you know your body and the baby are going to go through a lot physically, but never do you think your baby will be injured due to the neglect of someone on the hospital staff. There may be some things you can do to give your baby the best chance to make it through this process and come out completely fine.
Types of Birth Injuries
Birth injuries are an unfortunate result of something going wrong during the birthing or delivery process. Some of those injuries can have long lasting effects, or even do permanent damage such as developmental delays, neurological defects, and physical complications. The birthing process is so physically traumatic for baby, and the mother, if the baby is not removed from the birthing canal correctly, there is the potential to sustain broken bones throughout the body as well as bruises. The bruising may not last forever, but being born with broken bones can cause problems during the growing process as an infant. Another injury with lasting affects is Bell’s palsy which is when the baby’s nerves in their face have been damaged. If the never is torn, severed, or broken, the baby must endure surgery to repair it which puts them at additional risk. If your baby sustains any injury during the birthing process, you need to have someone who can help you through the process of what needs to happen next.
Birth Injury Prevention
Be informed. As you go through the different phases of your pregnancy and are close to birthing the child, be sure to ask questions. Knowledge is the one of the best ways to protect your child from harm. In the early stages, giving your baby the nutrients they need through prenatal vitamins and a healthy diet begins to help build the strong healthy bones, muscles and organs a baby will need during birth and in life. Get a journal. Taking notes and jotting down questions you may have through the process can help you and the baby be safer. Don’t be afraid to write down the names of doctors, nurses, and other people working with you and your baby. That way if anything happens during the birthing process you will already know those people who may have been involved. Tracking fetal movements and monitoring your baby at while in labor and during delivery can provide you with a better idea of what is going on with you and your baby. Unfortunately, due to negligence some birth injuries cannot be avoided. If anything does go wrong during the birthing process, make sure to call an attorney as soon as possible.
