You have probably heard the term root canal before and know that it is supposed to be a painful experience. While it is certainly uncomfortable to have your mouth operated on, you do not have to be scared because a good dentist can minimize your pain when you go in for a root canal. San Jose has a number of dentists who specialize in these surgeries and can fix the problem in the least invasive way possible. Before you head to the dentist, however, there are a few things that you should know about this procedure.
Symptoms of a Root Canal
If you have a cracked or broken tooth that is combined with a sharp pain that is very difficult to locate, there is a chance that you might need a root canal. San Jose residents should also know that discolored teeth, pain that extends to the ear or jaw, a sensitivity to hot and cold foods, a discharge of pus, and swelling of the gum could also mean that this procedure is necessary. If you run into any of these symptoms, your best option is to head to the doctor immediately for a checkup.
Often times, there is nothing that can be done to avoid this procedure. When you have an advanced gum infection, have a problem with tooth decay or constantly grind your teeth, you will eventually do enough damage that a root canal becomes necessary. Other times, an abscess will form around the end of your tooth and spread to other tissues and bones later on, making the surgery a necessity. Traumatic damage can also cause problems, as once the root dies, a canal could be your only option.
If the dentist decides that a root canal is your best option, he or she will start by taking some x-rays to determine the best course of action. Next, an anesthetic will be applied and the infected tooth will be isolated from the rest of the mouth. A small hole is then drilled into the hole, giving the dentist access to the pulp chamber. The pulp chamber is then cleaned out and everything that caused the infection is removed. After the cleaning, the hole is sealed with a crown.
