From the 19th century onwards, Fifth Avenue has been home to the wealthiest of the wealthy and the merchants that have catered to their tastes.
Fifth Avenue: A Brief History
Fifth Avenue was a narrower stretch of street until after 1908, it was widened. It was originally a residential district that achieved fame and status in the 19th century. It began when Caroline Schermerhorn Astor set up residence in 1862 at the corner of 5th and 34th Street. Yet, the movement of the wealthy and powerful to this particular section of Fifth Avenue did not begin until William Henry Vanderbilt built his mansion at Fifth Avenue and 51st Street in 1863.
Thereafter, the rush was on to purchase lots and to erect large residence in the latest styles. Fifth Avenue became synonymous with the New York Social Sets. It was home not only to the Astors and Vanderbilts but also the Goulds, Belmonts, William A. Clark, Morton F. Plant (who actually owned two houses), Felix M. Warburg and James B. Duke. In fact, by the beginning of the 20th century, this section of Fifth Avenue had been fittingly dubbed “Millionaire’s’ Row.” Few remain today. Many were replaced in the early 20th century by apartment buildings, the then more affordable forerunner of Fifth Avenue condos. For sale signs went up and mansions were demolished without a thought unless they were converted to apartments or, to retail outlets.
In the early 20th century, retailers began to make their way uptown. Among the first was Cartier. The retailer was to soon occupy one of the homes of Morton F. Plant. Over the years, the move towards high-end retail stores and boutique shops quickly changed the image of Fifth Avenue. Fifth Avenue became a shopping district that provided luxury goods and services to fashion conscious clients. Among the c icons who have subtly sold their wares on Fifth Avenue over the years are:
