The corset has been around for many years. It has been a way for women to show off a great figure and fit in with the styles of the time. In addition, as the times have changed, so have the uses for the corset and how the corset is used. Here is a brief history of the corset and how it has changed over the years.

The Early Years

As has already been mentioned, the corset has been around for many years and can even be traced all the way back to ancient Greece. Most people will immediately start thinking about the tight corsets that were used to restrict not only the waistlines of the women who had to wear them, but also their moments. While this was not always the case, they have long been an essential thing for both women and young girls to wear with their clothes. In some parts of history these women and young girls were expected to wear the corset all of the time in order to maintain the figure that was desired during the time period, this could mean that they had to wear the corset even when they were sleeping sometimes.

How Corsets Changed in the 1900’s

With the beginning of the 20th century, corsets began to change along with the styles. Many women stopped wearing the traditional dresses and started going more for the pants and shirts look that the men had been wearing for years. This could have just been because of personal choice, but more likely it was because women had to start taking on the men’s jobs while the men were off fighting at war. The women were not able to wear the skirts safely while at work and so they had to get rid of them for a short time. During the 20’s and 30’s a different figure was becoming popular for women to sport; it was more of a boyish figure. This might have also resulted because the women were taking on man jobs. If you were flat chested you did not have to worry about wearing a corset at all, which was probably the reverse of what you would have had to do in the past. Most women would still have to wear a corset and one that would flatten the breasts and gave the women a tubular shape compared to the earlier corsets that gave them more of a curvy figure.

Modern Corsets

Corsets are not worn by the general public anymore. They are typically reserved for special occasions where you would like to look your best, such as on your wedding day or on a night out on the town. Most of these corsets are still made to give us curvy figure while still giving us a slimmed down figure at the same time.
