Aerobic treatment systems act as sewage treatment on a small scale. In contrast to septic tanks, which use anaerobic processes, an aerobic treatment unit, or ATU, uses aerobic processes to digest sewage. ATU’s are most often employed for one or a few homes outside of public sewer systems.
How Does an ATU Work?
An ATU on Maui makes use of biological processes consisting of aerobic bacteria to break down organic matter. These bacteria exist in nature and consume decay and waste and keep water clear. The process consists of stages. In pre-treatment, the ATU process removes unwanted materials and solids. Next, the wastewater is mixed with air, allowing aerobic bacteria to digest organic and biological material. During settling, undigested material settles for later removal. Disinfecting uses a disinfectant, like chlorine, to create an antiseptic effluent.
Types of Systems
A small ATU on Maui typically use two types of systems:
- Fixed-Film System – This uses a film of biomass or bacteria on a porous support bed. The film does the digesting of waste. The film is aerated either by removing it or lowering the wastewater level, exposing the bacteria to air.
- Continuous Flow, Suspended Growth System – These work in a continuous flow without a biomass film. Bacteria works while in wastewater suspension, typically agitated and aerated by an air pump.
