Consumer Guide to Selecting CDL Courses in Chicago

Illinois drivers looking for a career change are looking at Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Courses in Chicago for training. CDL courses prepare the student to sit for the Commercial Driver’s License test at their local DMV.

Benefits of a CDL License

An average truck driver in Illinois currently makes over $63,000 per year. For many jobs with a similar salary prospect, a prospective employee would be looking at completing multiple years of educational or other training, yet a CDL training course can be completed in about one month’s time. Drivers have flexibility in their work hours and are paid to travel the country. One of the most significant benefits of a career as a CDL driver is job security. As long as our society has products to be sold, drivers will be needed to transport those goods to buyers.

CDL License Requirements

Each state has its own set of requirements in order to obtain a CDL. In Illinois, you must meet the requirements for a standard driver’s license, obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, and provide proof of your identity, residency in the state of Illinois, and your social security number. You must also certify that you are in agreement with state motor carrier safety regulations. In order to obtain your license, you must complete the CDL application form, pass the written CDL knowledge exam, take a driving test and pay all associated fees. A permit is required for 30 days prior to obtaining the license and does require both a written and road test.

Selecting the Best CDL Course

Attending a CDL training school is a great way to train for your CDL license exam and prepare for a career as a commercial truck driver. Look for a class that contains both classroom and on-the-road instruction. Some courses teach you to drive using simulated video games, however, it is best to attend a course where you will be using the actual equipment you will need to use in order to pass the road test. Better schools will have relationships with prospective employers and will even offer job placement assistance to their program graduates. Look at local review websites such as Yelp or Google to see reviews from past students or ask any commercial drivers you know for a personal recommendation.
