A Few Tips for Residential Furnace Services

by | Dec 1, 2016 | Plumbing

As with most appliances, regular maintenance is essential to ensuring proper functioning of home heating units. All units should receive professional Residential Furnace Services at least once a year, preferably at the end of winter, but there are a few steps that can be taken throughout the cold season by homeowners themselves as well.

There are three main components to most residential heaters: the filter, the blower, and the blower motor. All of these components can become clogged with dirt, rendering the unit ineffective. They should all be cleaned during the annual maintenance check, but sometimes require additional care as well. This can be accomplished by removing the access panel and sliding out the fan to gain access to the interior of the blower.

Should the fan assembly be difficult to slide out with the power cord attached, it can be disconnected. However, it’s important to mark the wire connections to ensure correct reassembly. Any visible dirt can then be cleaned with a toothbrush, using a vacuum hose to remove it once it has been adequately loosened. Be sure to clean all belts and pulleys, too. The buildup of dirt and debris can affect any of the three components of the heating unit.

Almost all furnaces also have a filter that traps most debris. This filter should be either cleaned or replaced on a monthly basis throughout the cold season. Regular filter cleaning can prevent dirt buildup in the rest of the furnace, so it shouldn’t be neglected. Check the filter by removing it from its place in front of the furnace vent and holding it up to the light. It should be obvious if it has become clogged with dirt. Should this be the case, it must be either cleaned or replaced. If the filter appears dirty each time it is checked, it’s a good idea to begin changing it more than once a month. If it’s consistently clean, it’s probably safe to check it less often.

Hopefully, these few tips and tricks have been helpful. Anyone looking for professional Residential Furnace Services can also check out  to speak with a technician or to schedule an appointment.
